Community Suicide Prevention

Military Network Radio and Linda Kreter with Co-host Justin Constantine presents:

Community Suicide Prevention

Susie Reece
Guest Susie Reece was nine years old when she returned home after her first sleepover and met by military police at her home on Ft. Myers. She was informed that her veteran father had shot her stepmother and then turned his weapon on himself. Adopted and raised by her grandparents, Susie is now the Violence Prevention Specialist at CHI St. Vincent (Catholic Health Initiatives, one of the nation’s largest hospital systems) and Founder and Executive Director of Suicide Prevention Allies. Each day, Susie adds credibility, knowledge, and outreach to help others.

The military community still faces the hurdle of stigma regarding suicide and awareness is now quite high. Statistically, suicide ranks as the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and is the only category that is rising. Teen and youth suicide, military spouses and partners, service members, and veterans – suicide knows few boundaries. What is the WHY that remains to be addressed? Susie shares that education, using your intuition, non-judgmental listening and noting changes in friends or family members is critical. Message her at www.Facebook.com/SuicidePreventionAllies for direct help, and CHI St. Vincent’s at http://www.chistvincent.com/ (look under Health and Wellness, Better You).
